Where Did The Phrase "That's What She Said" Come From?

In 2011, it seems that every teenager and grown adult has adopted the phrase, “That’s what she said!” when trying to eagerly impress their friends. It seems like anything that comes out of our mouths these days can means something else in a sexual manner and I can’t help but think where the hell this annoying phrase came from.

Despite the fact that majority of people I know do not watch The Office, the sitcom is responsible for making the phrase popular after what started out as a cheesy and lame joke in the pilot episode of the show. Since then, the phrase spread virally and has unfortunately become one of the most epic phrases of the decade. However, The Office is not where this joke came to be. Who is really responsible for making it so huge? That’s what she said. (F*ck! I can’t even help but write it.)

“That’s what she said” was believed to be first originated in 1992 SNL skit during a Wayne’s World skit with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. Now although SNL is where this phase originated, it surprisingly wasn’t Wayne or Garth to first utter the infamous phrase that would later blow up in world wide sex sensation.

The first person to utter the phrase on air was actually Chevy Chase in 1977 while doing a ‘Weekend Update’ skit on Saturday Night Live. Shocking, but true. The fact that this phrase is over 24 years old and was first uttered by Chevy Chase is unbelievable! Who knew Chevy Chase could actually be funny enough to start a iconic phrase? I sure didn’t think he had it in him.

I know…that’s what she said.
