"Flexisexual"

Maybe I’m just a little behind the curve, or maybe there are just way too many new words out there that is it impossible to keep up on them all. Either way, I have just recently caught on to the new word “flexisexual” which according to Urban Dictionary refers to those people who are flexible about whether they’re attracted to men or women, at no specific point in their life.

In entered the Urban dictionary language in 2009, apparently. The term seems to have made the news just a bit over in the UK in 2010, but more recently, we are seeing “flexisexual” gain a lot more popularity according to a TV station in Texas; Are more Women flexing their sexuality?

Now it really makes on think, if a new word makes it on to TV in Texas, it’s pretty much going to become lose in the wild, gaining a lot more popularity and before we know it, we’re going to be seeing this term everywhere, from the TV, to the newspaper, to magazines. Hey, maybe even your grandmother will hop on the “flexisexual” band wagon when describing your could be lesbian cousin.

However, the current news references to “flexisexual” has a lot to do with those college girls who are playing around idea of having sex with both girls and guys. Not that I have anything against it, it’s just a way for the mainstream media to give a word to something that is not so set in stone, like the term “bisexual”. Perhaps “flexisexual” is something that is subject to change and a word that is somewhere in between “bi curious” and “bisexual”.

Maybe I am just being a prude and taking all the fun out of the word. Let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to be casually adult dating a girl who is “flexisexual”? It’s the ultimate adult fantasy; one minute she is making out with you and the next she is making out with a hot girl. But, I just thought I would bring up the debate: do we need it, should we embrace it, or should we just not care?
